Peugeot Fidji 8-1/4-Inch Pepper Mill, Natural

The Mercedes of Pepper Mills
I had a lesser pepper mill for many years and found it very functional. I didn't see the need for a premium pepper mill because I figured they all grind pepper, right? HOW WRONG I WAS! When it came time to replace my pepper mill, I did some research and was impressed with the feel of the premium mills at the gormet kitchen stores. Of all the brands that I saw I was most impressed with the Peugeot and Williams Bond. After looking at the mechanisms I felt that the Peugot looks and feels more solid than the Williams Bond. I also liked the infinately variable grind selector which the peugeot has. When using the pepper mill, the peugeot feels solid. it never gets stuck on a pepper corn like my old one used to. The cast steel grind mechanism is designed with channels to guide the pepper corns to the grinder. It cracks the pepper corns before the final grind. But the important part is what comes out the bottom. The fine pepper grind is finer than I've seen on any other mill,...

Peugeot Sochaux 5.5-Inch SS Pepper Mill

A precision gem that died on me
I have used peppermills all my life and had heard Peugeot was the, um, Rolls Royce of the culinary world. And indeed, it is.

The only problem is that after a year of use, the top fell apart and could not be put back together again. Total loss. Problem is, the guarantee I mention below, has no instructions for return, no address, no phone, and is totally useless. A promise with no substance or backup. So despite the five star review I gave this earlier, I would avoid at all costs. The claim of a guarantee is just advertising copy, not real.

As described, the pepper that is created by this marvel is very uniform in size. You can adjust it from very course or extra fine. It is the fine setting which is so astounding, finer and "peppier" than any other mill I have ever used!Over the years I spent the price of this mill many times over, as the previous ones malfunctioned or failed after a year or two. Unlike those disappointments, Peugeot has a lifetime guarantee...

Problem with the top
After only a couple years of using this grinder, the metal tubes that connect the body of the mill to the circular mechanism at the top began to fall out. It became very frustrating to use, because as I ground pepper, a metal tube would fall out and land in my food. I finally gave up and bought a new mill. Very poor design for such an expensive pepper mill.

A Joy to Use
I bought this mill in June of 2007, and to this day I get get a kick from using it. I would say that I've doubled my pepper consumption simply because grinding with this mill is such a pleasure. The grind is consistent. The mechanism catches peppercorns until it is practically empty.

My previous mills, all bought at half the price, broke down or were destroyed when they fell from a counter top.

This mill has already taken a nasty fall. The ring bent slightly out of true, but a little gentle pressure and everything was back in place.

It wasn't easy to decide to spend the money on this item, but there are few things I own that perform so well.

Peugeot PM17156 Fidji 8.25 Inch Pepper Mill, Black Matte

A STELLAR Product From A Reputable Company - PEUGEOT!
Peugeot has been making pepper mills since 1842, I think they know of where they speak. I know that this is an expensive pepper mill, but it is WELL WORTH it's price. Very well made and sturdy, this selection, the Peugeot Fidji 8-inch peppermill brings true fashion and sleek looks to any dining room or kitschy kitchen table.

This mill has a black-colored hardwood base and a stainless-steel dome that proudly bears the Peugeot mark. The mill's channeling grooves line up those fussy little peppercorns in exact precision with the grinding grooves, thusly cracking the corns in half before the actual fine grinding process.
Adjustable grinding from the top of the mill is easy to use and makes the pepper either beach sand fine or coarsely ground like coffee. All according to your taste buds!

I have purchased two cheaper pepper mills in the $15 to $25 range in the past 10 years and they lasted approximately 2 to 3 years. Don't waste your money on an inexpensive mill. You get what...

Good Product.
Clean lines. Attractive in kitchen or dining room. Perfect size, some grinders are way too bulky/clunky for table use. Holds a fair amount of peppercorns. Only drawback is if you need a coarse grind, you have to adjust the nut almost to the point where the top is coming off. At that point the grinding action becomes so loose that pepper kind of "sprays" around your target rather than on it. A great product for super-fine to medium grinds. I like most of my pepper ground coarsely, so overall, this is merely a good product.

Food is a vehicle for pepper...
(... and butter, olive oil, spices and garlic.) My first Peugeot mill lasted me the better part of 20 years. Peugeot mills are an excellent value because the mechanism is well designed and durable. The style of the Fidji mill is nice, but the fact is -- it kicks out the pepper exactly like I like it. Experiment with pepper blends because of the varying densities, but I use this grinder for Tellicherry and similar peppercorns. It's definitely easier to clean than the old school designs. I have the matching salt mill, just to have a pair for serving, but it's not necessary to have the Peugeot salt mill from a functional standpoint. A salt mill with a ceramic mechanism is preferable due to the corrosive nature of salt+steel.
