Metrokane Wing Machine Corkscrew

Very heavy, very strange!!!
I am struggling trying to find the best wine opener....so far so bad.

I bought this and figured it would do its job well.....wow was I wrong.

First - this thing weighs as much as some full wine bottles....

Second its very confusing in how it works with its latching system....

I tried it on 2-3 bottles and just ended up going back to my $5 solution to open bottles.

If you are looking for something that looks cool then this item is for you... However, if you are a casual wine drinker at home, then this is probably not something you need....any cork screw will work fine.

3/5 in my humble opinion.

Get that cork outta here
This gadget looks space age and will extract a cork as advertised. That positive comment doesn't address what happens when the bottler changes to synthetic "corks." The screw enters as usual but when you attempt to push down on the wings the bottle starts spinning. The solution is to hold the wings and the neck of the bottle (contortionists please apply) and press the wings until the "cork" comes out. This one was designed for real corks and if your bottles always have such you'll be quite happy with the Metrokane.

Metokana Wing Machine Corkscrew a Bust
I was very disappointed with the way this product performed. It does not seat properly on the top of the bottle, thus the screw enters the cork off center making pulling difficult and resulting with a ruin cork with cork particles inside the bottle.

Metrokane Rabbit Silver Corkscrew - Soft & Comfortable Grip

Rabbit wine bottle opener
I have several wine bottle openers but I must say that this one is the best. It makes it fun to open wine bottles. The construction and material gives me confidence in holding and opening the bottle and it is lightweight for the amount of material involved. I have not missed opening a single bottle with a single operation and without tearing a cork. The foilcutter is a perfect addition with a clean cut. Well engineered, well constructed, and fun to use.

Easy and fun to use!
After buying one for my brother, I had to have one for myself, and for the rest of my wine-drinking friends and family. The Mekotrane corkscrew works perfectly every time, with absolutely no little pieces of cork left over to float in your wine.

The only quibble I have is with the foil cutter. It does its job, but not very well--I have several inexpensive foil cutters that do a better job than this one. But otherwise, it makes uncorking wine easy and fun.

How to use the Metrokane Rabbit
From a design standpoint, this is a very good product. But the documentation is pathetic, and was clearly never tested with new / real users. There is no explanation of how it's supposed to work. That understanding is very helpful: with it, you'll never have trouble, and will marvel at the clever design. Let's get started.

Have a bottle of wine handy on which you've already used the supplied (and very good) little foil cutter to remove the foil over the cork.

Take the unit in your hand and look at the movable parts. The overhead lever that swings outward / downward and then is reversed / brought back over the top - moves the spiral corkscrew up and down. To see this, operate the overhead lever with one hand while holding the clamping "side handles" with the other. When you move the overhead handle the corkscrew rotates.

Why is the corkscrew turning? Because it's forced to do that as it goes through a "guide" (the metal collar with gray plastic...

Metrokane Houdini 6-Piece Wine Tool Kit, Red

Pass on this one, buy the Rabbit instead
I was extremely excited when I originally ordered this item, as I have had great luck with this type of opener in the past. In addition, the extras in the package make this an attractive item. However, even though the gears of the the corkscrew are made of metal, the handles and body seem to be made of a cheap, flexible plastic. The solid feel of the Rabbit is missing in this model. In addition, about one of every 5 corks is not removed properly. The bottle stopper and drip ring are nice, but the foil remover is the worst I have ever used. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more money on a better quality opener...

Didn't Hold Up
I knew this was a cheaper version of 'The Rabbit', but I still expected it to last a bit longer than it did. After about 25 uses, the corkscrew no longer works, although I sitll have a fantastic bottle stopper and drip ring. This product is not recommended.

A New Way to Remove Corks
I've wanted this sort of opener but would not pay the [$$] or more it would cost to get one, until this amazing offer appeared. My first couple of attempts to open were clumsy, but once I got the hang of it "normal" corks open without a hitch. I find that I still use the old style opener on faux corks that seem to be stressing the mechanism of this opener.
